Will Artificial Intelligence Destroy Human Survival?

A recent report from McKinsey estimates that by 2030, 65 million Americans may lose their jobs, and the number could double to 150 million people by 2100. The job losses will be due to automation and AI, a subset of machine learning.

According to McKinsey, more than 80 per cent of jobs at this stage will be lost or replaced by technology, and it’s not clear how many jobs will die in these years once companies have no choice but to adopt new technologies to maintain business growth and keep up with evolving needs of consumers.

McKinsey reports on its forecast for AI in employment, predicting 15–20 million jobs that could go away without help. In addition, about 25% of existing non-retired jobs can become redundant by 2040. This research comes after McKinsey estimated that the US economy could generate $120 trillion worth of gains. Still, a large part of those gains eliminates the remaining non-retiring jobs.

AI Has Significant Implications in Terms of Employment

While there’s evidence these trends are already happening today, AI and other forms of robotic automation aren’t going away anytime soon. From Toyota to Netflix to Amazon, the future of manufacturing will change forever as businesses implement robots capable of doing so much work for them, including all sorts of human duties.

These days, we see robots performing tasks like welding, assembly, packaging, warehousing, customer support, marketing, and supply chain management. As many factories shift toward automated production lines, superiors may retrench these workers once a robot does its job.

For example, if an automaker produces cars one car at a time, a worker might then assemble each car from parts. They get paid a minimum wage per hour and must consider a long list of possible careers that require little effort. But robots can perform the same tasks quickly or easily, potentially rendering those jobs redundant. If robots can do more complex jobs, humans might face unemployment instead of job loss.

It’s not just about jobs — there are economic consequences associated with artificial intelligence adoption. One study found that US wages could rise by nearly 10 times over the next five years, and costs could rise by 50–100 times over the next fifty years when AI becomes mainstream tech adoption.

A second report showed that productivity growth could increase to 11.3% without implementing AI. The third report looked at what employers would need to provide employees with a competitive advantage once they become reliant on AI. It showed that increased education and training costs related to labour shortages could impact US innovation and innovation productivity.

Ultimately, while it is unlikely that some jobs will become utterly obsolete due to AI, this technological development could significantly impact businesses.

There’s no way to know exactly how much job losses will occur, let alone the numbers, but studies show that between 2016–2026 job losses are expected to soar to 200–400 million, creating up to 700 billion dollars in losses.

While the benefits might be huge, the burden this transition will carry is enormous for the rest of us. Fortunately, we can take measures to prevent job loss and slow the process.

The most important thing you can do to avoid losing a job is to look for potential opportunities within your current company. So, when looking for opportunities, create lists of open positions, learn more about whether or not a position is available, and talk with potential candidates.

Who Will Survive?

For those who want to continue working in manufacturing despite adopting AI, it’s essential to make sure your workplace is prepared for any upcoming shift requiring the full implementation of technologies like robotics. You should have the right resources, know how to deploy robots, and know specific areas you need assistance, such as machine operators or engineers.

You’ll also probably want to use employee feedback tools like surveys or polls to get feedback about how well you’re integrating emerging technologies. Finally, you might want to teach employees to adapt quickly to change by offering opportunities like flexible hours during the week or extra pay at weekends. These changes are a great way to attract talent, but they’re also good to support your team.

It can also affect a child’s grades without proper communication as they cannot understand how something went wrong. To help kids understand the effects of isolation, teachers and parents need to communicate regularly through conversation and support. We can learn to cope with feeling isolated and better prepare our youth to be emotionally resilient and independent individuals.

It would prevent future conflicts between students, but it could also reduce the effects of loneliness as family members of a student are involved in school life.

In sum, VR environments are much more common now than ever before, but they pose risks that could cause some severe concerns to humans. There’s no question that this type of experience can significantly increase feelings of isolation and alienation, yet it should not be seen as the answer to all our problems.

Despite these potential downsides, VR is worth exploring or trying out. If you enjoy creating videos or playing games on your PC, VR might suit you. Because of all of its potential, we shouldn’t dismiss the idea of VR for all of the reasons above.

All of the possibilities of working with VR environments are worth investigating. Whether you decide to be part of it or not, this experience will undoubtedly change how you view the world if you’re lucky. You might even be surprised that you can experience new worlds that you never knew existed or even learned about before.
