The god of War is a game series which is developed by American-based video game developer, Santa Monica. The first version of the game was released in 2005, God of War, and the latest in 2022 God of War Ragnarok. The lead character of the game is Kratos who is a Spartan warrior and his opponent is the great Greek god of the ancient Greeks. The Kratos take the revenge of injustice done to him.
The storyline of the game is quite different from the real-time history of ancient times, The game shows that Zeus made injusticeful work against Kratos but the real history tells that Zeus was the powerful and supreme deity of Mount Olympus who never tolerated wrong from their people and pilgrims and his role was the most significant in the greek mythology. Although Let’s dive into the role of each god in the game.
1. Athena’s Character in God of War
Athena, The ultimate goddess of wisdom and justice and daughter of the thunder god and god of all the gods, Zeus and goddess metis of the cosmos. As we all know she was born from the head of Zeus as he swallowed metis because he was scared of her strength. Eventually, metis genes made a remarkable creature of ancient Greece. Athena was the most powerful and invincible goddess of Greek mythology.
In God of War-III, starting the series, Athena’s role was more of an ally to Kratos and giving guidance. As the series proceeds the role of her in the series becomes closer and clearer. As Kratos tries to turn against the god of thunder himself and all the gods.
Athena also tries to convince and defend Olympus to Kratos and tells him to seek forgiveness and stop the vengeance against them, but Kratos refuses to indulge, leading to a tragic battle between them. In the end, Kratos destroyed and killed Athena but later survived in the form of spirits and tangled the life of Zeus.
2. Artemis’s Character in God of War
Artemis, God of war, hunting, and virginity is the daughter of the thunder god, and Leto who was Titan, and the daughter of Titans Coeus and Phoebe. Leto was often the reason behind jealousy of Hera for her husband Zeus. Leto gave birth to two children namely Apollo and Artemis and both were twin deities.
Apollo, The god of sun, light, and healing and one of the versatile gods of Olympians. He was the god of music and natural healing of nature which brought a positive agenda in ancient Greece. Apollo was a skilled musician and their most famous oracle was in Delphi.
Later Apollo married a mortal woman named Coronis and gave birth to Asclepius, who is the god of medicine and healing, He was raised with centaur Chiron who taught him medicine. Asclepius was so skilled like her father in medicine that some history believes that he could bring a dead person to life which created challenging abilities to have within any god. so the thunder god struck him with his thunderbolt and killed his grandson to death.
Artemis, the Olympian goddess of hunt was one of the twelve Olympian goddesses who reside in Mount Olympus. Artemis is considered the legend of ancient Greece. Artemis was the protector of childbirth and young girls for their safety.
Artemis was always portrayed as a strong and independent woman in ancient Greece. Artemis appears as an analogous to the moon goddess of ancient myths and emerges her connection with the lunar cycle.
The temple of Artemis in Ephesus is one of the most famous and best-resting places of the goddess Artemis and is considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Although Artemis doesn’t appear as any powerful character in the god of War III game series.
3. Thunder God‘s Character in God of War
Zeus, The God of thunder, the God of the Olympian gods, and the grandson of the first god. He was the ancient Greek god and the father of the most powerful and indomitable Greek god.
The role of the thunder god, the only god and god of other gods was one of the most powerful in the ancient myths but in the god of War III game series Zeus’s role was more manipulative and he always indulged himself in kratos’s life. Although he was the main antagonist of the Game series.
In the game, the thunder god appeared as the father of many mythological creatures but he was merely blameworthy for the injustice done to Kratos and Kratos took revenge on Olympians Zeus and other gods.
In the earlier, Kratos was on his side but in later games, Kratos understood the manipulation and injustice towards him which led to the fight between Athena and Kratos because Kratos wanted revenge for the things that happened. At the end of the fight, Kratos kills Athena in the god of War III series.
Eventually, The god of war game’s climax comes when Kratos kills Zeus with the blade of Olympus and ravages Olympus. This act of vengeance brings the biggest climax of the whole storyline and ends the war universe. Even though Kratos killed him, he survived the death by packing his spirits in the Pandora’s box.
4. Aphrodite’s Character In God Of War
Aphrodite, The goddess of love and Beauty and also one of the twelve Olympian gods. Aphrodite was born in the form of a sea from co-relation with the blood of the Uranus god. She was married to Hephaestus, the god of fire although she had multiple affairs with mortal and other gods.
In the god War game series, Aphrodite did not have any specific single-player game strategies highlighted but it is noticed that she had an intimate encounter with the Kratos rather than this, there is no specific role for Aphrodite in the game god of War and was not also killed by anyone in the game, as appeared as the immortal goddess of love and beauty. Although Aphrodite’s final fate is not being portrayed in the series.
5. Kratos: The Central Character
Let’s start with the starting of the game Kratos was the Sparta warrior who was respected and most powerful. Kratos was the benefit of the Olympus god but when Kratos knows about the betrayal of Zeus, Kratos decides to take reprisal for injustice.
The injustice was that Ares, the son of the thunder god, and Zeus, the thunder god tricked Kratos and killed Kratos’s wife, Lysandra who was a mortal woman, and daughter Calliope by the hand of Kratos himself when he was serving in the spartan warrior. Kratos shortly took revenge for tricking him and the death of his family. Furthermore how Ares tricked Kratos into killing his own family is still yet another mystery of the god of war.
Kratos was indeed the son of the thunder god with his multiple affairs with other goddesses and mortal women but he decided to trick him and destroy his family which led to more and more unknown and powerful creations of deities and of course, multiple stories related to them.
6. Are the Greek Gods Alive in the Game Series?
The god of War has many levels and storylines. Maybe the next game series will have a different storyline and even the Greek gods will still be alive But in the final fate of the god of War III series, many gods were killed by the Kratos and ended their lives as their final fate but later survived by unusual ways. The gods Kratos killed are Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hera, and Athena.
In the next series, the upgrade is done and new characters and creatures are created and left behind the Greek pantheon starting a new journey of Norse mythology with other Norse gods. In the next series, there is no confirmation of the other Greek characters and therefore the death of them is confirmed. Ragnarok was the last series of the game where the final battle between the characters and the series ended.
7. Which Greek Gods Survived Kratos?
In the god of War series, Kratos almost killed all the Greek gods but some seemed to survive in the usual ways. The Kratos kill Zeus, Athena, Hades, Hermes, Apollo, and Artemis for the injustice with him and for destroying his family while he was serving as that Sparta warrior. Let’s study how the Greek god survived after being killed by Kratos.
- Zeus: The original god survived Kratos from being packed in the pandora’s box.
- Athena: The goddess survived in the spirit form and troubles him in multiple ways.
- Hades: Hades had a battle with Kratos but did not directly kill him. On the contrary, hades was killed by Zeus for his mortality.
- Hermes: The god was killed and then there is no status of him being alive in the game series.
- Artemis: The goddess was killed but Artemi’s final fate in the game series is still unknown.
Overall, the god of War series made a storyline like the Kratos, the spartan warrior seeking to take retribution against the other Olympian gods for the injustice and manipulative nature against him and for destroying her family. And there was also the in-depth story of Norse mythology and their gods like Odin, Thor, Loki, Baldur, Freya, and Tyr.
Maybe in the next game, the storyline will be different. In Ragnarok, the series leads to the end of the Norse creatures and the god of Greece. It was the final battle between the characters and their enemies and the end of the game series.
