There are over a hundred Greek gods and goddesses in Greek mythology, and twelve of them are prominently regarded as the greatest of all time. Those Greek gods and goddesses are primarily Zeus, Hermes, Apollo, Ares, Hades, Hephaestus, Poseidon, Aphrodite, Hera, and many more. Whoever the deity is, it is still a mystery about where these gods have lived. 

We know that they all played a big role in Greek mythology, which usually talked about the ancient stories, beliefs, and traditions in Greece, but not about the deities’ homes often. Moreover, it was speculated that these immortal gods and goddesses still live around. But the question is “Where?” 

1. Where Did the Greek Gods Live?

According to Greek mythology, Greek gods and goddesses lived in big and magnificent palaces. They were so massive that only the deities were supposed to fit in, but not the commoners. The palaces were usually described as radiant forms of gold, diamond, and other luminous materials. Not to forget the auro, expressed in the books as awe-inspiring and beautiful. 

With big pillars, huge living rooms, luxurious chambers, lively gardens, neatly constructed arches, and beautifully intricate carves, each palace in the books represented each god and goddess. For example, the god Zeus, the god of the gods, was said to have the strongest and grandest home, which was situated right on top of Mount Olympus. 

2. Where is Mount Olympus? 

The first and foremost place that was mentioned in the books was none other than Mount Olympus. It was depicted as the abode of twelve important Greek gods and goddesses with always pleasant weather. This mountain was of height 3000 meters and was considered one of the tallest mountains in Greece.

The mystical place was situated in Northern Greece, between regions Thessaly and Macedonia. In fact, with the same name, a mountain was located in Greece, although, it was unclear whether it is the place cited in the history or the present-day mountain.

Moreover, many hikers have tried climbing the mountain, but they have yet to come across any ethereal places like that of the Gods. Mount Olympus was often delineated as an acropolis, a Greek temple far above the modern mountain Olympus and held by the clouds. 

Mount Olympus was home to over 12 Greek gods, who were also known as Olympian Greek gods. 

3. Who Lived on Mount Olympus?

3.1 Zeus

Zeus was the strongest and the most important god in Greece. He was the absolute monarch of Mount Olympus and the thunder and sky god. He was known for conquering his father’s kingdom and defeating the Titans in the war.

Moreover, he was the decision-maker in the Olympian council. Subsequently, he became the god of gods and humans, as he procreated many demigods and other mythological figures. 

3.2 Poseidon

Poseidon was the god of sea, storms, earthquakes, and other natural calamities. Furthermore, he ruled the seas and its creatures. He had the power to create storms, calm the seas, and cause earthquakes with a strike of his trident. 

3.3 Hera

Hera was portrayed as the queen of gods on Mount Olympus. She was the goddess of marriage, family, and children. Moreover, she was the wife and sister of Zeus. Their marriage was the most talked about in history, despite many conflicts and infidelities. 

3.4 Athena

Athena was the goddess of wisdom, intelligence, courage, knowledge, and inspiration. She was the offspring of Zeus. She was known for her strategic moves, which had helped several gods to triumph. 

3.5 Apollo

Apollo was an all-in-one god, who had domains in music, arts, medicine, and archery. He was, according to Greek mythology, addressed as the sun god. He was the first son born to Leto and Zeus. 

3.6 Demeter

She was the goddess of fertility, agriculture, and the harvest of the Earth.  

3.7 Hestia

Hestia was the goddess of the sacred fire, home, hearth, and family. She was popularly regarded for her calm and composed nature, who didn’t get herself involved in the wars, but only focused on protecting the sacred fire.  

3.8 Artemis

The mistress of animals, Artemis, had sworn to be the goddess of wilderness. She was also a descendant of Zeus. Furthermore, she was heralded as the goddess of nature, hunting, and the moon. 

3.9 Hephaestus

Hephaestus was the god of blacksmiths, craftsmen, and fire, that is primarily, comprised the art of craftsmanship. He was the god, who sculpted weapons and armor for many Greek gods and goddesses, including the thunderbolts of Zeus. He was born to Zeus and Hera. 

3.10 Aphrodite

Aphrodite was considered the most divine goddess of love and beauty. Symbols like roses, doves, and seashells are used to describe the beauty of Aphrodite in Greek history.  In the abstract, she was represented as the deity of the powerful force of love in every creature’s life.  

3.11 Ares

The god of war, conflict, and violence was titled to be Ares. Since he was the son of Hare and Zeus, there was always a complex family dynamic present. Ares was the key player in the Trojan War. 

3.12 Hermes

Hermes was not a god himself, but the emissary of the Greek gods and goddesses. He was notorious for his mischief and was seldom considered a navigator of voyages, including the one to the underworld. Besides, he was the son of Zeus. 

4. Where Else Did the Greek Gods Live?

On the other hand, there were still other Greek gods and goddesses, who lived in different places other than Mount Olympus. It was not necessarily true that all gods and goddesses lived together as a family, but each had their domain and palace.

Although, they all come together at times, for the council meeting conducted on Mount Olympus, to discuss important issues regarding divine and mortal realms. For instance, Hades wasn’t supposed to reside on land, but under the world. 

4.1 Troy

It was an ancient city, now recognized as a part of Turkey. It was also widespread for its Trojan War between the resilient Greeks and Trojans. No one will ever forget the Trojan horse, which tricked the Trojans, leading to the Greek’s victory.

Apollo was a part of the Trojan War and supported the Trojan side, whereas Athena stood for the Greek side. Poseidon, the god of the sea, Aphrodite, and the messenger Hermes, were all a part of the city of Troy. 

4.2 The Underworld

Hades was the god of the dead and also the ruler of the Underworld. Alongside Hades, his wife, Persephone lived in the Underworld. Here was where the deceased souls were brought in by Charon, the ferryman of the Underworld. The souls were put on trial and were faced by three judges, namely, Minos, Rhadamanthus, and Aeacus. Mostly, the underworld was filled with dead and wicked souls. 

4.3 Athens

This place was associated with the goddess of wisdom, Athena. The city was the result of the war between Athena and Poseidon, in which Athena won with her olive tree, representing peace and prosperity to the city. 

4.4 Delphi

Apollo was the deity of the place called Delphi. It was assumed to be the nucleus of the globe. Pythia, a priestess at Delphi, was famously known for transmitting the advice and prophecies of Apollo were held in this place. The temple of Apollo in Delphi was considered one of the sacred places in Greek mythology. 

4.5 Atlantis

Atlantis was not an actual Greek god pantheon, but more of a beautiful island or civilization. It was claimed to be either submerged beneath the ocean or completely vanished.

It was primarily described by the philosopher Plato, however, there is no concrete evidence or proof to support the existence of this place. Atlantis was populated by many Greek demigods, which were led by the king of the sea, Poseidon, and his son, Atlas.  

5. Final Thoughts 

Greek gods and goddesses were mythological figures that were part of Ancient Greece. Mount Olympus was the only known and often-mentioned place in Greek Mythology linked with the gods and goddesses.

This was considered the highest peak in Greece and was described as a heavenly realm. It was the abode of numerous Greek gods and goddesses, and where most of the influential decisions were made here.
